Objective: showcase impact of an African Development Bank agricultural program to 17 Heads of State and thousands of other participants in a virtual summit about improving Africa’s food security.Our documentary was part of an advocacy campaign to spur investment in Africa’s food systems.
We draw attention to the documentary’s significant COVID-era media production challenges: organizing a field shoot in Ethiopia and identifying a character for the video’s story arc - when you can’t travel, and you work with a local crew you’ve never met. Significant teamwork and innovation, such creating shot lists, sending rushes from the field, hosting communications capacity-raising Zoom calls for non-specialist staff about sourcing video, and collaboration with local authorities for permissions, were deployed to meet our objective.
The draft version of this documentarywas so well received that more virtual event videos were requested…to be delivered by virtual summit launch. Our small team finished this documentary - plus fouradditional videos - in just 48 hours.
At end of summit: African countries committed to double agricultural productivity, as development banks and multilateral institutionspledged $17 billion to increase food security.
