Are heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems “spreaders” of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)? That possibility became acute in July 2020 when 239 scientists from 32 countries co-signed an appeal to the medical community and relevant national and international bodies to recognize the potential for transmission of SARS-CoV-2—initially thought to be spread primarily through large respiratory droplets that, once expelled, fall quickly to the floor—as an aerosol.
Among the recommendations of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force are to supplement general ventilation with airborne-infection controls, such as germicidal ultraviolet (UV-C) light. Although UV-C technology is covered in ASHRAE Handbook volumes and other technical resources, questions concerning its application persist. In response, AMCA made the use of UV-C light for HVAC air and surface disinfection the subject of the cover story of the 2020 edition of AMCA inmotion. Long-established but not widely utilized, UV-C light has proven effective against previous coronaviruses and looks promising against SARS-CoV-2.
