    Akçansa maintains its pioneering position in the Turkish cement sector in terms of adopting sustainable and responsible business models as well as in the commercial field. Sustainability for Akçansa is the main strategic element that shapes the management approach, working culture and future existence with its social, environmental and economic dimensions. Concrete is the most widely used material in the world after water. Globally, enough concrete is used to fill a football stadium every 30 seconds. However, in the increasing urbanization all over the world, it is identified with concrete and the cement industry is exposed to a negative perception with its effects on the environment and climate. Akçansa, which attaches importance to sustainable approaches in its sector is the first and only company in the Turkish cement industry to publish a sustainability report. Akçansa, which has focused on climate, environment and sustainability issues since its establishment, places sustainability as an enabler at the core of the company's main strategy. The sustainability focus is governed by the "Sustainability Executive Committee", which reports to the Board of Directors at Akçansa. Akçansa Sustainability Committee continues its activities within the framework of 6 themes in parallel with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    Akçansa has gathered its sustainability focus in 6 main groups,
    -Occupational health and Safety
    -Reducing Environmental Footprint
    -Innovation and Digitalization
    -Circular Economy
    -Being a Good Neighbor
    -Human, Harmony and Transparency

    Implementing industry-leading practices in each focus, Akçansa has published the "2030 Sustainability Target and Roadmap", which combines its sustainability roadmap and all its actions, the strategic management of sustainability efforts has implemented the Artı Yaşam 2030 strategy project in order to be ready for risks and opportunities in advance. In this project, a long-term sustainability strategic roadmap was designed over 36 metrics in 6 focus areas extending to 2030. Action plans are determined and started to be implemented for each target. This practice, which will set an example for the Turkish cement industry, includes environmental, social and sustainability practices, as well as roadmaps for the management of risks and opportunities. Akçansa implemented Environmental Emission/Imission Monitoring – Green Chimney on the online emission monitoring system, which was officially monitored in 2020, and increased efficiency by monitoring legal compliance 24/7 and automating reporting. In addition, Akçansa uses non-recyclable wastes as alternative raw materials and fuels in order to reduce foreign dependency in energy consumption, to find a solution to the waste problem and to reduce carbon emissions. As the first company in Turkey to obtain a waste incineration license, it also reduces emissions caused by the cement industry by using alternative fuels and raw materials. In the project, more than 5 million tons of waste has been converted by burning so far.

    Akçansa carries out projects that will support sustainability goals in its own internal processes and considers the climate impact in the products it offers with sustainable innovation. In this way, Akçansa aims to contribute the climate crisis not only with its own activities, but also with the activities of all sectors where cement is used. Akçansa’s DUOCEM product leaves a 10% less carbon footprint than Portland cement, thanks to its mineral additive content of up to 20%. With this feature, DUOCEM is both a building-friendly product and an environmentally friendly cement that supports greenhouse gas reduction. SolidCem, contains 21-35% mineral additives. It is climate and environment friendly as it causes 15% less greenhouse gas emissions in its production. Green Alum is a 'Green, Light Ready Mix' product. Green screed has up to 35% lower CO2 footprint with the special mineral-added cements used in its production. With the special chemical additives in its composition, it becomes 25 percent lighter than traditional screeds and contributes to thermal insulation in buildings. Its insulation feature supports energy efficiency in its use in buildings. Smart Beton, is a special application that helps to determine the strength of concrete used in buildings without taking samples. By using a sensor and a phone application, the durability of concrete is monitored instantly with digital sensors placed inside the concrete. With this product, Betonsa (Akçansa's ready-mixed concrete brand) became the first concrete company to prove the sustainability of its quality and share it with its customers.

    With pioneering efforts in all these sectors, Akçansa Büyükçekmece Factory and Betonsa Gebze Ready Mixed Concrete Plant have raised the "Responsible Use of Resources Sustainability Certificates" issued by the Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association Quality Assurance System Economic Transmission to the Gold Level in 2021. In the 2020 IMSAD Investment in the Future Awards, Akçansa won the 1st place in the field of Environment with its Fuel from Waste Project. The Social Responsibility Project developed with Smart Beton in the 1st place in the field of Economy and the Social Responsibility Project developed with the focus of Being a Good Neighbor was entitled to the 2nd prize in the Social Area category with My Neighborhood.
