Makati is known to be the Philippines’ premier city and the center for business. Before the pandemic, almost one million people pass through its pedestrian underpasses and walkways on a regular workday. This is why various infrastructure projects to promote pedestrian mobility were put in place. When the pandemic happened, the need for inclusive outdoor civic spaces became even more pressing. People were seeking accessible outdoor venues that feed the soul. The Legazpi Underpass is one of the key access points to the center of the Makati Central Business District. This underpass has high foot traffic and visibility, making it an ideal place for public art. The key market or audience would be entry to mid-level office workers who either commute or walk to work. As part of its advocacy for sustainability, the objective of painting the mural in the pedestrian underpass is to improve people’s walking experience through art. Being the center of business, Makati is perceived by some to be a place that is mostly for work and has limited venues for play. Although there are venues for art, these are either within formal institutions such as the Ayala Museum or cater only to the older upper income market. There is a need to bring art in Makati to more people.  Aside from placing the mural in a highly accessible public, the art piece has to be relatable and Instagrammable. The resulting mural entitled “Co-Existence” is a vibrant, colorful art piece on the ceiling of Legazpi Underpass that was painted by Janica and Jerson Samson together with displaced local artists. It aptly features local flora and fauna, being located at the gateway to Ayala Triangle Gardens - the city’s oasis that is home to greens and nature.

  4. Optionally, you may list creative and production credits for your event - a list of the people and organizations that contributed to its development:
