Laying the foundation stone -

Aluminium, the green metal, is vital for the growth and progress of any nation. Realising this importance of the metal, India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, conceived the establishment of Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO). BALCO was founded in 1965 as a Public Sector undertaking in Korba, Chhattisgarh as an Aluminium complex with a production capacity of 1 lakh tonne/annum along with a power generating facility of 270 MW with the vision of contributing significantly towards development of country.The strategic acquisition of BALCO in 2001 by Sterlite Industry, a Vedanta Group compnay, led to a turnaround of an unprecedented scale and BALCO became one of India’s greatest privatisation success stories. The Vedanta group has a 51% stake in the company, and the Government of India has a 49% stake. Today, BALCO stands tall as India’s iconic producer of a vital raw material for the country – Aluminium.
