Nomination Title: Amani the Turtle

Date this publication was first distributed: August 2019

Amani the Turtle is a children’s book published by Dubai Municipality’s Environment Department about the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle. The book was written with the aim of teaching children about the Hawksbill Turtles life cycle, breeding habits, diet and the threats they face as a species. It tells the story of a young coming-of-age turtle called Amani who, on her 21st birthday, is returning to the same beach she was born on to lay her eggs. To address the topic of littering and beach pollution, the story then takes the reader on a journey along the beach with the young turtle who becomes entangled in a plastic bag caught up on the rocks. The story was written with the hope of inspiring children to have compassion, understanding and love for Dubai’s diminishing Hawksbill Turtle population. The story was published in English, Arabic and Braille and distributed through schools and learning centres. It is available digitally at: https://www.dm.gov.ae/documents/amani-book_e_lr/

The story became the focus of a series of in-school educational activations about Dubai’s wildlife.
