Mentor by eDrivingSM is a smartphone-based digital driver safety program that incorporates the FICO® Safe Driving Score to provide a standardized measure that facilitates consistency and fairness in driver risk assessment.
The FICO® Safe Driving Score is derived using proven methods for predictive modeling perfected by FICO over decades of data analysis. The methodology entails the development of a data-driven, accurate, and robust predictive model that leverages telematics data to rank order future risk of safe/unsafe driving behavior. Five variables (which represent the most predictive driving behavior: Acceleration, Braking, Cornering, Phone Distraction, and Speeding) contribute to the score’s calculation. These variables primarily focus on the recency and severity of negative events, such as the prevalence of harsh braking/ evidence of excessive speeding, and also consider positive events, such as the prevalence of smooth stops.
Detailed trip feedback and engaging micro-training modules are delivered to drivers’ phones, helping them understand their risk exposures and make safer decisions behind the wheel.
To provide an even more comprehensive and holistic view of driver risk, Mentor data is combined with other risk indicators through eDriving’s DriverINDEX® platform. DriverINDEX® integrates driver performance “big data” from disparate sources (including 3rd parties) into a single system, providing a unified view of risk across an organization. Data sources can include online risk assessment results, license checking; collision/incident history; telematics data (Mentor and/or other); CSA data.
Presented to managers through a Virtual Risk Manager® (VRM) platform, the “big data” for drivers is converted into an at-a-glance view of driver risk. VRM was updated in Q3 2020 to incorporate a new Manager Coaching Toolkit, with simple coaching templates to help managers work with their drivers to reduce risk, as well as Tableau-powered dashboards, with actionable intelligence that’s more intuitive and easier to access.
The resulting big data output rank orders risk drivers, allowing managers to easily identify and focus on the riskiest drivers (80% of an organization’s risk, insurance and liability costs can usually be attributed to 20% of drivers). Managers can then easily assign intervention in the form of additional training or coaching, directly through the Mentor app.
Ecolab
Ecolab conducted a six-month pilot program using Mentor with over 500 drivers across three regions. By the pilot end, Ecolab had experienced a significant 30% decrease in Collisions Per Million Miles (CPMM) in pilot regions, compared with an increase of 23% in non-pilot regions. Ecolab’s subsequent rollout to 12,000 drivers across 10 divisions in the U.S. and Canada proved that:
-Drivers with a FICO® Safe Driving Score of 710 or below were two times more likely to have a collision within the next three months vs. those with scores above this threshold
-Drivers with more Speeding events are at higher risk of crashes
Drivers with crashes had significantly more risky driving behaviors (e.g., Harsh Braking, Acceleration, Cornering and Phone Manipulations)
AARP
A 12-week pilot study of 500 drivers carried out by AARP and eDriving found Mentor successful at helping drivers age 50 and older stay safe behind the wheel.
-After their eighth week of participating in the study, adults age 50 and older originally considered “poor” or “risky” drivers based on their Week 1 scores showed significantly improved behaviors with a 176-point average increase in their FICO®Safe Driving Scores.
-60% of participants saw their FICO®Safe Driving Score increase between the study’s start and finish.
eDriving analysis
Recent eDriving analysis conducted to coincide with 1.5 billion miles driven using the app concluded that, over six months, drivers initially categorized as Very High Risk or High Risk:
- Improved their FICO® Safe Driving Score by an average 32%, becoming Medium Risk (reaching Low Risk after 15 months)
- Decreased speeding events by an average 71% (82% over 15 months) and distraction events by an average 39% (57% over 15 months)
During 2020, delivery and service sectors faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many companies recruiting additional delivery drivers to accommodate increasing home deliveries and many service organizations adding vehicles to their fleets to enable employees to travel individually. Mentor’s portability enabled organizations to continue protecting employees who drove for work purposes and helped them promptly incorporate drivers into their safety programs.

FICO® Safe Driving Score Predicts Likelihood of Future Collisions
This article describes an analysis of the score that confirmed the lowest scoring 20% of drivers are up to 30% more likely to have a collision in the future than the highest scoring 20% of drivers. Furthermore, the analysis verified the assumption that unsafe driving behaviors, such as hard braking events, are correlated with higher risk of future collisions.
