Dr Maryam played a significant role as a backline hero to support the COVID19 resilience strategy of the Ministry of Health UAE and then later established the data and statistics department introducing an AI-driven strategy to manage the pandemic for Emirates Health Services (EHS) UAE.

She made a significant contribution to the healthcare system of the UAE during COVID19 by formulating research plans and creating strategic alliances for the utilization of big data analytics tools for decision making. She supported pandemic research through data and led the development of new AI-based prediction tools, solutions, and services. This was achieved by digitally equipping and supporting the EHS clinical settings in close collaboration with the health information systems of the UAE. An enterprise-wide data analytics platform called ‘MANARA’ was developed to facilitate the analysis of a massive amount of health-related data and provides purpose-built visualizations for vaccination strategy and PCR testing decisions.

During the pandemic, UAE witnessed a series of covid-19 waves, and the surges in cases that resulted in constraints on the knowledge sharing, availability, and distribution of resources in the healthcare system of UAE. Under her leadership, AI-powered health services were introduced in EHS and committed to using its integrated system of innovative approaches with advanced technologies

As an example, several highly interpretable machine learning models were developed for an early prediction of covid-19 infection risk in different population groups of UAE, inpatient admission from ED to reduce ED crowding in hospitals and prediction of potential risk factors of covid-19 related mortality in the critical care units in UAE

The development of models for early prediction of no-shows helped the OPD administrators to plan the resource utilisation that reduced hospital expenses, and improved physician productivity and operational efficiency in already strained health facilities

The AI-driven models and platforms ensure highly précised clinical solutions and its implementation/application in EHS is the best evidence of research-oriented practice in the healthcare sector. Her technological initiatives helped in generating valid insights from the huge datasets and supported in sharing of scientific knowledge with the healthcare providers, patients, researchers, and the general public
