For two years, freelance communications expert Jaime has been on a mission to help NGOs protect Cambodian children from COVID-19’s impact. He’s also supported Cambodia’s remarkable, vaccine-driven recovery. Much of his work was pro-bono, subsidised through paid projects with UNICEF, the EU, and WFP. Children in developing nations were particularly vulnerable to COVID’s educational and economic consequences. Having worked for Cambodian education NGOs for 5 years, Jaime feared much progress would be erased. Quitting his full-time job, he went freelance so he was free to work where he’d have most impact. Since 2020, he’s helped promote one of the world’s 10 most successful vaccination campaigns, invented a safety-promoting sport called Social Distance Football, broken a Guinness World Record to fundraise for a struggling NGO, supported a groundbreaking youth-mentoring programme, and called national attention to a COVID-related learning crisis. He’s now working on developing a national mental health campaign. His communication campaigns won 22 international awards, including 4 Gold Stevies, a Gold Shorty Award for Creative Consultant and Silver Stevie for Communications Professional. Before Cambodia, Jaime worked in London PR/communications, ultimately as a multi-million disability charity’s Head of Press. He launched media campaigns doubling voting by disabled people in UK elections.

  4. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this second question: Outline the nominee's achievements since the beginning of 2020 that you wish to bring to the judges' attention (up to 250 words):

    Total 250 words used.

March-2020: left full-time job at NGO TLC (after launching media campaigns winning 9 international awards) to work with NGOs directly protecting Cambodian children from COVID-19, including development agencies operating at national level and smaller community-based NGOs.

April-2020: set up freelancing business www.boxclevercreative.com to win clients to subsidise pro-bono work. Microsoft and UNICEF were clients within 6 months. Launched Beekeeper, a new organisation tackling Cambodia’s growing mental health crisis.

May 2020: worked pro-bono for ISF Cambodia, inventing new safety-promoting sport, Social Distance Football. Explainer video viewed by 60,000+ young Cambodians online, generating media coverage across four continents.

September-2020: became UNICEF lead writer, supporting team to help Cambodian Government raise awareness of COVID safety, promote vaccines and debunk misinformation. Cambodia now one of ten most vaccinated countries globally.

March-2020: worked pro-bono with arts/education NGO Phare which faced closure after public performances closed. Proposed media campaign and fundraiser driven by a Guinness World Record attempt for longest circus: show smashed fundraising targets, gained massive international media attention reaching 20 million, won 11 awards.

    [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION]

November-2021: worked on UNICEF Cambodia’s first youth-campaign mentoring project, leading to 13 new social change campaigns, generating content reaching 2.8 million and 7 national media features.

March-2022: supported launch of UNICEF/Cambodian Government report into schoolchildren’s learning loss during COVID, securing front-pages across national newspapers.

May-2022: UNICEF team granted platinum by Hermes Creative Awards for work between 2020 and 2022.

  5. If you are providing written answers for your submission, you must provide an answer to this third question: Explain why the achievements you have highlighted are unique or significant. If possible compare the achievements to the performance of other players in your industry and/or to the nominee's past performance (up to 250 words):

    Total 246 words used.

Jaime leapt into the unknown when he left his full-time job to freelance as COVID started, resulting in his most creative, impactful work yet.

Having fallen in love with Cambodia and worked with several NGOs educating disadvantaged children, he knew COVID-19 could reverse progress he’d witnessed. He therefore declined [REDACTED FOR PUBLICATION] advice to repatriate at COVID’s peak, deciding to stay and work to protect these gains. As well as paid contracts with UNICEF, the EU and WFP, he worked pro-bono for smaller NGOs Tiny Toones, ISF and Phare.

Since 2020, his work won 19 international awards for 5 different communications campaigns for 4 different clients:

    • Anti-violence campaign (TLC, 4 awards, including Festival of Media global award)
    • Multimedia storytelling (UNICEF, 2 awards)
    • Inventing and promoting a new sport (ISF, 2 awards)
    • Promoting record-breaking event (Phare, 11 awards, including 4 Gold Stevie IBAs)
    • Launching youth-campaign incubator project (UNICEF, 2 awards).

Most importantly, these campaigns had real-world impact, keeping education NGOs alive and informing millions of children on COVID-safety and vaccines. These achievements may be unprecedented by a solo communications professional, leading to Jaime winning a 2021 Shorty Phenom Award as Best Creative Communications Consultant. He also became a thought-leader, writing articles in national newspapers championing creativity, education, and children’s rights in post-COVID recovery.

Jaime has developed a network of Cambodian photographers, film-makers, influencers, activists and communicators. The international awards put Cambodia and these talents on the global map, helping the country’s creative industries in the challenging recovery ahead.
