The video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAggGMr_vP0 gives an introduction of the app and explains the key principles when the pandemic started. On our website dashboard we show usage statistics of the CWA. As the usage of the app is completely voluntary it shows the success of our decentralized approach with over 45m downloads, 183m test results, 116m warnings and 8m positive results. Data privacy is one of the primary objectives to reach expectations by the users. Therefore, we worked together with Chaos Computer Club which is the biggest white hacking organization in Europe. We openly published the architecture and data privacy statement to show users that they are in full control of the data.

Based on the open source approach it also gives the users the opportunity to have direct insights how the app works, but also to contribute to the active development, to raise critics or to provide feature requests which could be discussed with the stakeholders and implemented. This is accessible on GitHub as main code repository, licensed under Apache 2.0 as open source, so everyone can fork and reuse the app for its own country like Belgium did.

International press information can be found in the attachments.

Covid-19 suddenly and violently changed social life around the world. In Germany, the drastic restrictions which were ordered by the state as part of the social distancing to contain the pandemic were especially noticeable for everyone. They forced radical changes in social interaction, in our work life and well-being. Conventional methods of pandemic control would not be sufficient to contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus. After the official request of the federal government, we started developing a digital tool, the Corona-Warn-App (CWA) in April 2020. During contact restrictions, a distributed project team, a fully agile development project environment with scalable partner infrastructure was built in a very short time. Under extreme time pressure and in remote work, with countless rounds of coordination, the CWA was created, which completely fulfills all required epidemiological, security and data protection aspects. The transparency created with open-source development is key to protect end-users and to promote high acceptance. Over time, the app adapted to pandemic developments and political decisions. For example, it initially helped to break infection chains in Germany by informing you if you had recently been near a person who subsequently tested positive. Later, this alert function was extended within Europe with its interoperability functionality. As vaccines became available, the CWA offered a feature to add digital vaccination certificates and test certificates to prove the vaccination/test status during the re-open phases in the country. With an event registration and the representative alert, the CWA could be also used now at events to warn of possible infections. The Corona-Warn-App is an effective digital tool in the different phases of a pandemic response. It helps to save lives by interrupting chains of infection and gives the population orientation, security and thus quality of life. It has been downloaded more than 45 million times, proven to stop 116 million infection chains. More than 186 million rapid antigen and PCR test results have been digitally transmitted. To date, over 8 million positive test results have been verified and shared with other users.

We are proud of the CWA!
