The asterisk* throughout means evidence of the specific claim is in supporting materials.
Sealand is an integrated container logistics company powered by Maersk, the world's largest shipping company. Since 2015, the company has been growing a community program that counts 15 long-term partnerships throughout the Americas*. Each of these is evaluated on its ability to support progress on mutually defined social objectives in education, in alignment with UN SDG 4*. While aligning centrally, employees and non-profit counterparts lead local programs and collaborate to solve social problems.
One of the 15 partnerships is with Enseña Perú(EP), a non-profit that promotes a movement of change agents and builds collective leadership to transform education in Peru. It acts on individual school, community, and national levels. Leaders rooted in their local culture are placed in schools to drive academic success and develop soft skills among students. They then become system-wide actors who work to reshape the educational system*.
Since 2017, this partnership has been investing in Fernando Belaúnde Terry Elementary School (FBTES) in Callao, a community burdened with some of the highest rates of violence, imprisonment, and suicide in Peru*. The region was the second most affected in the country by the coronavirus.
As The Collaboration Vector Inc. and Sealand's community program implementation partner, it's a privilege to pay tribute to this partnership that pivoted, remained at the forefront, and innovated to address pandemic challenges*.
Enseña Perú first acted on a policy level, gathering virtually with its national network of teachers, alumni, student representatives, staff, school directors, and policy makers to plan and deliver educational change. In collaboration with the Peruvian Ministry of Education, EP helped lead a nationwide strategy "Aprendo en Casa" that made educational programming accessible to 2.5M Peruvian students via TV and radio.
Locally at FBTES, professional Lezlie Ducos (PEP) transitioned to a virtual environment to teach English and develop soft skills among students. Inspired by EP training, she used creative and empathetic approaches to engage students, including songs, games and art that catered to children's' social-emotional needs. Lezlie figured out, with parents' help, what motivates their child then tapped into it.
While the proportion of children who could be reached rose steadily as each month passed, Lezlie enabled access to education for more families by coordinating a televised "Cellular-athon" and making a public appeal for used cell phone donations.
Sealand leader Pedro Saavedra worked with EP and colleagues in Peru, Panama, and Texas to migrate to a virtual volunteer program. Employees tapped into their skills and passions to develop "Sealand's Got Talent", where English instruction is reinforced among students, and coaching is provided on handling money, theater studies, recycling, virtual dance classes are delivered, and much more.
This partnership is differentiated by its approach of collective leadership and success in uniting students, school officials, non-profit, company and employees in a common pursuit of excellence in education at FBTES*. It contributes to the holistic well-being of students who have endured disproportionate hardship and supports them in realizing their potential and becoming agents of change in their community*.
