Under the brand name Lumitel, Viettel Burundi S.A began providing telecom services with 2G and 3G networks in June 2015. In January 2017, it started providing 4G service. From that time, Viettel Burundi started installing 4G equipment on different BTS. Econet, Smart, and Onatel dominated the market, with 85%, 7%, and 8% market shares, respectively. After the launch of Lumitel, the market changed dramatically. At the end of 2016, Lumitel became the leader in mobile service in Burundi with 1.5 million active subscribers. The company's network infrastructure maintains the largest in all 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies, with mobile coverage reaching 96% of the country's territory. Lumitel’s fiber optic infrastructure boasts nationwide coverage and accounts for over 75% of the total international outbound call traffic. The market has completely changed and the competition has increased, but Lumitel kept on gaining market share by increasing the number of customers. Up to now, the company has had more than 2.5 million active subscribers, accounting for 60% of the market share. The operator also holds 75% of the data service segment in the country.

Strong channel distribution deployment
Right from the start, Lumitel decided to build its own distribution channel and also channels built by super agents. The channel built by super agents developed naturally following the supply and demand of the market. Due to the coverage network, Lumitel ensured good coverage of the distribution channel and the quantity of agents per area as per the business plan. The role of the company-owned channel is to cover areas ignored by the natural channel, such as remote and difficult-to-reach areas.
Up to 2021, Lumitel has built the distribution channel with 35,000 agents that cover 96% of Burundi, an increase of 1.5 times over 2020. From 2020, it has convinced 5,000 rivals' points of sale and 6,000 rivals' agents to join Lumitel. This contributed to the channel's distribution booming right on up to 2021. Pioneering Operator
Lumitel has been pioneering in providing mobile phone packages with promotions for voice, text messaging, and internet connection, such as a social package with unlimited access to Facebook and WhatsApp, as well as a Student package.
Burundi is also the first overseas market where Viettel offers an unlimited in-network texting package for feature phones with fees equivalent to VND500 ($2.2) a day. The development of many value-added services (VAS)
After successfully deploying traditional services, Lumitel started shifting to value-added services (VAS). Lumitel developed and continues to develop corporate services (USSD services, Software of SMS Brandname, cloud server service,...)
