The originating idea for this video was to use empathetic storytelling to drive behavioral change—specifically the need to use Alt-Text on images to support blind and low-vision employees. However, the greatest impact was on Joyce Oshita personally because, as she said, it made her “feel proud to tell her story.” Previously, she was sensitive to being the “the blind tester,” and as a result it was taking her months to report problems she was having on workplace applications. After the video, Joyce made storytelling her go-to tactic for working with vendors, or as she put it, "You tell one piece of honest vulnerability, and it changes the conversation." Joyce’s epiphany: Accessibility is best explained through storytelling because--unless the need is personalized--accessibility is just a list of dos and don’ts.  By using empathetic storytelling with her vendors, Joyce was able to have dramatic success with the accessibility of workplace tools. Some examples include:

    • Miro - unlocked content on Miro boards to screen reader users, a difficult technical challenge
    • Slack - delivered screen reader announcements within the direct messaging feature.
    • Zoom - enhanced captioning features and continues to iterate on accessibility features.
