TUSAS Engine Industries Inc.(TEI) is an incorporated company established in 1985 as a joint venture of Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc.(TAI), General Electric(GE), Turkish Armed Forces Foundation(TAFF), and Turkish Aeronautical Association(TAA).
TEI’s mission is to become the leading engine company that designs, manufactures, and provides service for products on a global scale for power systems and their derivatives used in aviation.
TEI has expanded its capabilities in recent years, not only to become a company manufacturing with high technologies, but also an R&D company realizing indigenous engine designs, transforming designs into products
The structure of industry brings the need for a workforce capacity that will allow different projects simultaneously. This industry of strategic importance is always in need of talents.
In addition to the defense industry, TEI is active in the aviation industry which is a sector where there is no room for error. It requires a comprehensive and costly training process for a newly hired employee to reach the level of competence that match all the requirements.
Experienced employees in industry can easily find jobs abroad. Making TEI a preferred workplace, attracting and keeping talent is a critical priority. Thus,TEI has a well-established talent management strategy at four levels (see. App3 )
In line with the "Gaining Talent" pillar, systematic activities are pursued to ensure Company is recognized by the critical audience and to strengthen the brand value.
TEI Aviation Engine School is the first talent development initiative as a comprehensive program for university students as potential workforce for aviation sector. It lasts 14 weeks with 14 modules, delivered by TEI Academy, Management Team, Senior Experts. Program is one of the key milestones for Gaining Talent pillar of talent strategy.
Our target is
- to increase awareness of our organization,
- to ensure they have general knowledge about the aviation sector, general principles of aviation engines, piston engines,gas turbine motors,engine types,manufacturing and assembly techniques,
- to contribute to the upbringing of competent engineers and to encourage them to work in field.
It contributes to upbringing of the profile of potential employees for the sector.
Unique Features of theProgram:
- The AES is the first program for university students in aviation/defense industries in terms of scope and number of participants.
- More than 5,000 applications were received in 2weeks,resulting in a record turnout.
- A very comprehensive and special curriculum has been created. It is highly difficult for students to reach such an advanced program through their individual efforts.
- Although the sector was affected by downsizing in terms of volume and financials due to global pandemic,it was decided to make this investment for the future of industry and young generation.
- Rising trend in the aviation sector has been disrupted. Based on research conducted by McKinsey on sectors affected negatively due to Covid-19, (1)Commercial Aviation(40%), (2)Aviation Sector(36%) are the most affected ones. The aircraft had an impact due to number of engine maintenance decreases, need for spare parts and orders decreased.. Despite limited budgets during pandemic, this investment is done.
- It was developed with internal instructors’ globally critical know-how. consisting of 60 courses.
- Senior management provided one-to-one support in providing content and training.
- All instructors went through the instructor formation.
- A comprehensive communication plan for universities has been done.
Results
- 5099 students participated to AES with 94% NPS.
- 58% of the participants graduated in 2021 started to work in Defense&Aviation sectors, 24 were hired@TEI.
- The program was awarded by the biggest youth agency as “best corporate training program for university students” by 12500 students votes
- Program has a huge positiveeffect on employer branding with social media interaction/press coverage.
- Top management showed full commitment for the following cohorts.
- Almost half of the young graduates' recruitment has been done from graduates of the program and it continues.
