    The worldwide pandemic compelled us all to adjust our ways of living, and Oman was no exception. With the majority of people staying at home and our lives becoming more digital than ever, businesses must adapt. The onboarding process became an important part of the customer experience, the decisive moment that shows is a potential customer will become the actual one or will leave the company behind. Omantel - the country's largest telecommunications provider - wanted to make things easier, more available and more innovative for its subscribers and provide its customers and partners with a completely overhauled mobile application. The application features state-of-the-art security standards giving customers peace of mind and unmatched services such as buying new devices, applying for home internet and more, without the need to visit any of Omantel’s outlets.

    The updated application features a modern design and sets new benchmarks aimed to enrich users' experience in the Sultanate and the region. It is a one-stop-shop that offers all mobile, fixed and internet services, using the user-friendly simple design and face or fingerprint recognition technology further enriching the user experience. That moment also marks a birth of an innovative feature that gives a real competitive advantage: an online onboarding process that uses machine learning and text recognition techniques to automatically identify and verify users, making it the first of its kind in the GCC. The app has also been recently equipped with features such as automated chat with the artificial intelligence system (Noor) digital assistant and WhatsApp chat system around the clock.

    The idea of a simplified online onboarding process emerged shortly before the launch of eSIM in Oman. Omantel was the first telecommunications provider in Oman to offer its customers the option to order and activate an eSIM online. However, the main trigger for developing a unique online onboarding process was the need to replace the physical verification of new subscribers with something as secure but faster and easier. 

    Moreover, Omantel customers can use the App and learn about the new offers and packages. In addition, it provides a simple and convenient feature of online purchase of Omantel partners' products such as Apple iTunes, Sony PlayStation, and Microsoft, in addition to 10 other available products, with a plan to add more. It should be noted that the App contains approximately 20 value services added in the entertainment section, which can be directly activated through the app.

    Becoming an Omantel customer in minutes

    SIM cards and eSIM can be activated fully online, using the unique automatic identity verification. All the user needs to do is scan a document through the application. All the data is automatically captured and used to fill out the form thanks to text recognition techniques. This can automate the tedious data entry for credit cards, receipts and business cards. With the cloud-based API, it is also possible to extract text from images of documents to improve accessibility or translate documents. 

    To authenticate their identity, users must snap a selfie. Then, using state-of-the-art face recognition algorithms powered by Deep Learning, the state-of-the-art face recognition algorithms assess if the photo from ID and the selfie match. All verification is done online and is validated automatically.

    The ability to order and activate the eSIM online has allowed Omantel to make the entire onboarding process available completely online. Customers can select and activate selected mobile plans entirely from their phones. In such difficult times, the solution implemented at Omantel was really the answer to their needs.
