Emirates Health Services (EHS) was one of the first organizations in the region to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques for COVID-19 management, especially for estimation of epidemic trends, and exploration of safe vaccination drives. Effective and validated Machine Learning Models were developed in the EHS healthcare system for the following outcomes
- to identify at-risk population for COVID-19
- to identify the population that would require admitted care
- to identify the patients that would deteriorate
- to identify the patients at risk for other communicable diseases through this pandemic
- to design COVID-19 vaccination strategies focusing on the vulnerable population
- to identify people at risk who would need to be prioritized for boosters to reduce breakthrough infection
- to improve financial sustainability for the EHS facilities
EHS had established advanced AI models and compared deep-learning-based algorithms (decision tree-based, Random Forest, Neural Network, and Gradient Boosting models) for providing care excellence during the pandemic. These models assist in effective diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and control of covid-19 in the UAE population.
- ICU Mortality rate in COVID19 patients was predicted using a validated AI model, including Ventilator usage, Ferritin levels, MCHC, and Hypertension as the top predictive factors.
- A Prediction model for COVID 19 infection risk was developed and found males, people in the age group of 46-60, those who experienced worsening cough, body ache/headache, and people at home quarantine were more prone to covid-19 infection. This prediction tool helped the clinicians to early identification of patients at risk and provide immediate care.
- Inpatient Admission in Emergency Department was predicted using an effective AI model, which identified arrival mode, age group, and presence of multiple comorbidities as the top important factors for Inpatient admissions. Accordingly, user experience, clinical excellence, and financial outcomes in the EHS facilities were improved.
- An innovative AI approach was formed to foresee the patient no-shows in EHS hospitals which significantly reduced hospital losses and deprivation.
- An advanced AI technique built to effectively manage the communicable Disease outbreak in the UAE. The model is beneficial to monitor and plan for prevention through targeted screenings and resource mobilization/optimization.
