Being the visionary that he has always been, Jean Henri Lhuillier continues to raise the bar for the PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies (PJLGC)—a multi-industry company that owns and operates micro financial services, banking, retail, hotel and restaurant management, IT, sports management, and real estate businesses in the Philippines—to higher levels of excellence as its president and CEO. For more than 30 years, Jean Henri Lhuillier led the growth of Cebuana Lhuillier to serve its more than 30 million clients nationwide, establishing the organization’s brand strength in the industry of micro financial services.

With the vision of financial inclusion for all Filipinos – regardless of one’s socio-economic status, this led Mr. Lhuillier to tirelessly innovate Cebuana Lhuillier’s products and services and grow its network that already reached more than 3,000 stores across the Philippines. Expanding its financial services from being a small pawnshop brand in the Visayas region, Mr. Lhuillier is committed to finding more ways to bridge the gap of the unbanked and the underbanked amongst its clients – this paved the way to Cebuana Lhuillier’s becoming a full-pledged micro financial institution in 2019.

Continuous Mission of Financial Inclusion Even in the Midst of the Pandemic

Lhuillier has always pushed for continuous innovation and growth, even in the face of the most difficult times. When COVID-19 hit the Philippines, the economy was badly affected. This included a big chunk of businesses who were drastically affected by the nationwide lockdown. Cebuana Lhuillier is no exception. However, as one of the businesses declared as essential, the company pushed on–dedicated to serving the long lines of clients waiting patiently in front of Cebuana Lhuillier branches during the long weeks of the pandemic. To address and diminish any negative impact brought by the pandemic, Lhuillier and his management committee quickly pivoted and began a massive effort to promote the use of technology in complement to the services offered in brick-and-mortar stores. This effort in in line with his transition of complementing his call for financial inclusion with financial mobility.

Jean Henri Lhuillier oversaw the development of the  eCebuana app, which harnesses the power of a branch on your phone, the company made it possible for clients to access microfinancial services such as Micro Savings, Money Remittance, Bills Payment, and E-Load services among others.

For clients who would like to pawn, send money, buy insurance, and pay bills at home – Mr. Lhuillier also led the launch of the Cebuana From Home website which encourages clients to stay home and still fulfill their micro financial needs. The website processes most of the clients’ needed product and services and accomplishes it quickly. Aside for eCebuana app and Cebuana From Home, Mr. Lhuillier also launched ProtectNow, a web app platform that provides a one-stop insurance shop allowing clients to compare the lowest prices of insurance offerings and monitor their insurance policies and claims in real-time. ProtectNow aggregates the best possible insurance options for home, auto, travel, and family insurance needs coming from some of the credible insurance companies in the Philippines.

Mr. Lhuillier also led a vital role in the creation of Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers, Inc. (CLIB), an insurance brokerage company that aims to help provide Filipinos with better access to more inclusive and affordable insurance products and services. With CLIB, which transforms the 20-year-old Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Solutions into a future-ready insurance broker, providing even more Filipinos with access to insurance that is affordable and designed for their everyday life.

Lhuillier has been the forefront of implementing the “TECHBRICK” strategy which allowed Cebuana Lhuillier and its products and services to maintain its relevance by ensuring availability and access regardless of channels: whether in brick-and-mortar stores, through the development of super apps, and web platforms.
