Through the “Duty of Care” Roadmap, our clients build the capabilities and culture to care for the well-being of their staff.

Countless global organizations—whether nonprofits coordinating volunteers across remote areas of the globe, corporations employing factory workers on multiple continents, or government agencies staffing diplomatic postings abroad—faced new risks to the well-being of their staff  when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Around the world, employees struggled to get healthcare and access basic services through lockdowns, even as isolation and economic stresses weighed heavily on mental health.

Our own organization, Global Press, faced all of these risks–but we had the benefit of years of preparation to care for our staff amid shocks and uncertainty. In our work operating more than 40 news bureaus staffed by women reporters from Mongolia to Zimbabwe, we face a constant onslaught of global crises. On a given day, our reporters might witness violence among armed groups (Mexico), face overnight devaluation of bank balances (Zimbabwe), or endure a stifling curfew and internet ban (Indian-Administered Kashmir). We’ve also faced multiple outbreaks of the Ebola virus around our bureaus in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Keeping our journalists safe and healthy has always been central to our ethos and operations. At Global Press we designed a holistic safety and security system to meet the specific needs of local female journalists, for whom extraction is not an option. This requires an interconnected security system that prioritizes physical, emotional, digital and legal security. Duty of Care is implemented in three distinct ways: training (20%), day-to-day protocols (75%) and crisis response (5%).

Rooted in 16-years of expertise implementing the industry’s leading Duty of Care Program, our B2B division, Global Press News Services (GPNS), offers a Duty of Care roadmap to newsrooms, global businesses, and government agencies. The service  offers businesses looking to build their own Duty of Care system, a strategic framework and the tools necessary to design their own holistic security system. Once implemented, the service  positions organizations to focus on risk mitigation as they care for their staff.

Over the last 2-years of the global pandemic the demand for this one-of-a-kind service has only increased. We’ve worked with news organizations based in the US, Europe and over 30 newsrooms across East and Southern Africa.

GPNS begins with a comprehensive 360 review and assessment of any existing internal policy guides, pitch processes, handbooks, contracts, org charts, job descriptions,  strategic plans, business plans. Followed by interviews with key leadership to assess and contextualize the materials submitted for the comprehensive review. This is followed by a workshop with key team members to enable organizations to begin developing a Duty of Care program that meets the unique needs of their staff, volunteers, contributors, and partners. It explores decision-making principles, key questions for stakeholders and provides tools to roadmap their Duty of Care system.

In Spring of 2021, Prison Journalism Project (PJP)  hired GPNS for the Duty of Care Road Map to ensure that over 400+ incarcerated writers from over 35 states are thoughtfully engaged and that their holistic wellbeing as writers for PJP is central to their operations.

Most recently, over 35 CEOs of African Radio and Television broadcasters — from Standard Media Group in Kenya to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation have developed their own Duty of Care Roadmaps through a service  engagement with Global Press. Hundreds of reporters, editors and media professionals will be able to benefit from this system and we will see ripple effects for not just the quality of stories produced, but also the prioritized safety of the people that work for these institutions.
