Bagcilar is one of the most populous districts of Istanbul. There are 19,765 disabled individuals residing throughout the district. Bagcilar Municipality aims to provide public services to every individual living in the district in an equal and fair way. In order to make the district accessible and livable for everyone, services and projects that will raise the age standard of disabled people are being implemented.
The Barrier-Free Pool Project has been designed by the municipality in order to improve the quality of life of disabled people of all ages and types of disabilities living in the district. The project is a study that has been implemented for the first time in Turkey. Within the scope of the project, a grant of 4 Million Turkish Liras was obtained from the Istanbul Development Agency. The project was implemented with the partnership of Bağcılar District Governorship and Medipol University.
The pool specially designed for in-water sensory integration training, which is the first in Turkey in it; light and sound systems that support the visual and auditory system, gradually a platform system that can serve every individual by deepening, people who are afraid of water and have anxiety a therapeutic area created by the pool for children, such as an in-water bicycle and an in-water treadmill materials to increase physical capacity, for the transition from a wheelchair to a pool adjustable lift system, mirror systems that contribute to many areas such as body awareness there are different features such as.
It is the first and only pool that will serve disabled people between the ages of 2 and 60 to all disability groups such as Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy.
A personal and focused therapy plan is created for disabled people who are evaluated comprehensively with the help of Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who are experts in their field and focused on the areas that need to be improved.With these systems created, contributions are made to the physical, cognitive, sensory and psychosocial development of children.
According to the pre-therapy evaluation findings, disabled people are divided into 3 separate groups as Free swimming, In-Water Sensory Integration and In-water Exercise. As a result of these groupings, it is aimed to increase the socialization and communication skills of the individuals who will come to the sessions, so each individual is organized in such a way that they are together with similar profiles and age groups decently.
During the therapy process, which is determined as 30 minutes, there are floating water balls, basketball hoop sets, football goal sets and many similar materials in order to make the pool safe and fun for children. Especially for autism and intellectual disability groups, neurodevelopmental disorders are improved to a great extent with the right method.
With the new systems added, the pool has been designed to support all these development steps. In the case of in-water exercise, it is evaluated according to the development steps of the individuals, it is aimed to protect and increase the existing capacity, the development of the entire November skeletal system and to increase independence in daily life.
The most important feature of water is that it offers a rich environment that will support many sensory systems of individuals. It is aimed to contribute to the development of skills such as the development of balance, increasing eye contact. At a later level, it is aimed that the individual can get to know his body better, increase his attention span, and be able to do planned and meaningful activities. On the top step, it is aimed to increase the skills such as increasing the self-confidence of the individual, increasing the cognitive skills, increasing the concentration, increasing the academic skills.
