Nomination Title: LabRoots, Inc.
Contributing to the advancement of science through content sharing capabilities, LabRoots is a powerful advocate in amplifying global networks and communities through virtual learning. Launched by CEO, Greg Cruikshank, and Co-Founder, Don Cruikshank in 2008, LabRoots has become a primary source for trending scientific news, webinars, virtual conferences, and more. Offering articles and webcasts that go beyond the mundane and explore the latest discoveries in the world of science, LabRoots users can stay atop their field by gaining continuing education credits from a wide range of topics through their participation in the webinars and virtual events.
Since 2008, LabRoots has steadily grown to an audience of over 3.7 million registered users. The company has become a pillar in the virtual learning space for academics and industry leaders, and due to the shift in in-person events to all things virtual, in 2020, LabRoots traffic increased by 91%, and the amount of LabRoots produced virtual event and webinar increased by 319% and 164%, respectively. LabRoots virtual events and digital products provided universities and companies with an alternative, turn-key solution to sharing their latest products and research to the scientific community.
Since the beginning over 2019, LabRoots has seen significant growth, with the majority of the growth seen in 2020, as in-person events were cancelled and a new solution was necessary for networking and research sharing. Over the past two years, the company successfully produced over 90 virtual and custom virtual events and over 1800 webinars. To account for the company’s increase in business, LabRoots grew from 36 remote employees in 2019 to 58 employees in 2020.
In 2019-2020, LabRoots added three new virtual events, BioProcessing, Forensics & Toxicology, and Opioid Crisis and introduced the Genetics Virtual Week, the Microbiology Virtual Week, and the Coronavirus Virtual Event Series. Featured speakers for LabRoots’ virtual events included:
Joshua A. Gordon, MD, Ph.D., Director of National Institute of Mental Health, Walter Koroshetz, MD,, Director, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
George Church, Ph.D., helped initiate the Human Genome Project, with 2 profile segments on 60 minutes
Barney S. Graham, M.D., Ph.D., Deputy Director, Vaccine Research Center for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, spearheaded the first COVID-19 vaccine that entered clinical testing on behalf of the NIH
Ashish K. Jha, M.D., M.P.H., a leader in the COVID-19 response, with appearances on CNN, MSNBC and Fox
The Coronavirus Virtual Event Series, specifically, has consistently increased in attendance throughout 2020 and has become a cornerstone for information for researchers in academia and industry, providing the latest updates on COVID-19, transmission, vaccine development, and more.
What’s unique about LabRoots, is that there are no other companies in the industry that offer what LabRoots does. For LabRoots users, we offer free webinars and content presented by world-renowned scientists. For LabRoots customers, we offer a turn-key solution to hosting a virtual event or webinar, handling production, marketing, and providing detailed reporting. This positioned LabRoots well in 2020, offering those in the industry a means of sharing research and products in a virtual environment, with features such as virtual labs, networking lounges, poster halls, and more.
Although LabRoots cannot be directly compared to other players, it is worth it to mention how certain aspects of LabRoots compare. For example, ON24 aids in hosting digital experiences, however, their traffic and production support is not as sufficient as LabRoots and the marketing efforts and digital design assets are not offered. Alternatively, there are media-based companies, such as ResearchGate or Science, that offer some webinars and virtual events, along with the latest science news, but the production support is not high quality.
What also makes LabRoots unique is the in-house virtual events, with the feel of a scientific conference, LabRoots Virtual Events are changing the way scientists share data and network, while simultaneously providing access to scientific research to the general public, free of cost. The value of this has been evident since the company’s inception, but truly shined with the addition of the Coronavirus Virtual Event Series, where the latest research updates on COVID-19 were collected in one place.
