As New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States,The Salvation Armyof Greater New York immediately mobilized to meet the sudden and drastic increase in need. The Salvation Army’s approach was two-pronged: As an international NGO, The Salvation Army was able to utilize economies of scale to access supply chains for groceries and PPE.With 38 community centers already ingrained in the most vulnerable neighborhoods across New York City, Long Island, Westchester, and the lower Hudson Valley, The Salvation Army was able to quickly and efficiently distribute these supplies to those who needed them most.
Through deliveries of pantry boxes to homebound seniors, people with compromised immune systems, and grab-and-go groceries and hotfood at community centers, theGreaterNew York Division provided more than 7 million meals since March of 2020. Additionally,The Salvation Armyset up a free hotline for emotional support and referrals to services, provided over 1,000 children with camp-in-a-box for an at-home camp experience, andprovided thousands of remote music andperforming arts lessons.
When the national moratorium on evictions is lifted, The Salvation Army is prepared to release much needed rental and utility assistance for families facing eviction and for those having to choose between buying food or paying the electric bill. The Salvation Army of Greater New York is continuing to reevaluate the need in our community and adjust our long-term recovery plan.
