Nomination Title: Myles Hunter & Victor Kotseruba
Myles Hunter co-founded TutorMe with Victor Kotseruba in Los Angeles in 2015. TutorMe is an awardwinning online platform that connects students with highly-qualified tutors in seconds. Its over 13,000 tutors provide 24/7 personalized support to students from elementary through graduate school. Since the earliest days of TutorMe, Hunter’s mission has been to help students achieve their academic dreams no matter their background so that they will, as he puts it, “never feel lost.” As of 2020, TutorMe has partnered with more than 200 universities, schools, and organizations to offer the platform to students.
Thanks to the company’s business model of charging institutions rather than individuals, students attending TutorMe’s partner schools have access to 24/7 academic guidance at no extra cost. The company has seen a 330% increase in tutoring hours in 2020 as compared to 2019. With many educational institutions at all levels in distance or hybrid learning models, family members have struggled to take on the role of teacher or facilitator of online learning. TutorMe has eased some of that burden by partnering with employers across the country to offer tutoring as an employee benefit. The service not only helps students master the subjects they need to keep their education on track, but also support parents looking to expand their skill sets in a challenging economy.
In response to user requests, early in 2020 Hunter and his team launched TutorMe’s Writing Lab, which allows students to submit school essays or papers for review. Within about an hour, students receive feedback on their essays from an expert writing tutor and learn valuable writing techniques they can take with them to the next essay. To make sure that students have access to the most qualified tutors possible, the TutorMe team has implemented a rigorous screening process. Only 4% of tutor applicants are accepted. This high standard means that students receive on-demand academic help from certified teachers, professionals, and highachieving college upperclassmen.
As TutorMe’s customer base continues to expand, Hunter makes a point of forging a human connection with users every day. His daily routine begins with reading user surveys and reviews, and Hunter is always engaging with users to find new ways that TutorMe can help them take control of their own education, no matter what the circumstances at their school or the resources their families have. Even as Hunter and the founding team manage the explosive growth of TutorMe’s partners and users, TutorMe is at work on a mobile app, yet another way to put a personal academic connection at students’ fingertips. Hunter, 29, is already in his sixth year as CEO of TutorMe, which continues to level the academic playing field for hundreds of thousands of students across the globe.
