Wind River Studio is a high-performance, production grade Kubernetes-based offering for managing edge cloud infrastructure. Optimized for the network edge, it addresses service provider’s complex challenges of deploying and managing a physically distributed, cloud native vRAN infrastructure. Cloud Platform delivers a foundation for a geographically distributed managed solution able to simplify Day 1 and Day 2 operations by providing single-pane–of-glass (SPoG), zero-touch automated management of thousands of nodes, no matter their physical location. Wind River Studio is a commercially supported version of the StarlingX open source project and lends itself to demanding 5G use cases applicable across mission-critical industries.
Wind River Studio is the industry’s only cloud infrastructure designed from the ground up for 5G vRAN applications. This includes the ability to deploy and manage thousands of sites as a single cloud native infrastructure from a single pane of glass, ability to scale down to a single server node at the far edge (without losing any cloud management functionality at that node), ability to orchestrate software updates and upgrades across the entire cloud in a zero-touch automated manner (including rollback), and ability to zero-touch deploy edge clouds from bare metal up to active status. A leader in the early 5G landscape, powering the majority of 5G RAN deployments, Wind River is delivering mature production-ready offerings based on proven Wind River Studio technology that is live in deployment with operators such as Verizon and Vodafone.
Verizon uses the cloud-native infrastructure and analytics capabilities of Wind River Studio for its 5G vRAN deployment, which played a key role in the world’s first end-to-end fully virtualized 5G data session (https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-fully-virtualized-5g-data-session).
Wind River Studio is also used by Vodafone to build Europe’s first commercial Open Radio Access Network (RAN), which will be one of the largest in the world. Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) also completed an economic validation of Wind River Studio which included quantitative and qualitative analysis to determine the cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and ability to deliver innovation for 5G deployments. The validation focused on economic benefits of using the Wind River solution vs. legacy telco systems and competitors who are getting into the market via enterprise network solutions. One of the standout findings of the ESG assessment was the fact that Wind River Studio is able to support edge sites with a capital cost reduction of 67%-75% at each site depending the workload needs of the site. The analysis modeled the expected cost to procure hardware, software, applications, and maintenance contracts over a three-year timeframe along with the relative efficiency of the Wind River solution vs. competing solutions.
