Abu Dhabi has provided an example of how to be an active and effective player in the global fight against COVID-19. This is evident through the Emirate being recognised as the safest city in response to the pandemic two times in a row according to the DKG ranking and contributed to the UAE being recognised as the most COVID-resilient country in the world, according to the November 2021 ranking by Bloomberg.
In one of the largest integrated logistical efforts of its kind, the HOPE Consortium is Abu Dhabi’s global solution to COVID-19 vaccine logistics and distribution: formed by six founding partners, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, AD Ports Group, Etihad Cargo, Maqta Gateway, Rafed and SkyCell.
In one year, the HOPE Consortium has handled over 250 million vaccine doses in over 60 countries, including those in MENA, Asia, Africa, Europe and the CIS, while solving for key challenges in global vaccine distribution:
To build awareness of the vaccine logistics issue, in March 2021 the HOPE Consortium hosted key representatives from WHO, UNICEF and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the first World Immunisation & Logistics Virtual Summit, to unlock scalable, real-world solutions to achieve mass, equitable worldwide distribution of vaccines. As a new entrant in the industry, the HOPE Consortium successfully brought together globally renowned speakers and attendees from 191 countries to participate in this event.
Challenge #1: Ensuring full visibility during the global vaccine journey
Solution: HOPE Consortium employs an innovative blockchain-enabled solution called mUnity, which tracks the vaccine journey through the cold chain from production to the point of inoculation in real-time, ensuring complete visibility across every shipment.
Challenge #2: Minimizing vaccine wastage during its journey from factory to arm
Solution: An efficient hub & spoke model led out of KIZAD in Abu Dhabi, the HOPE Consortium offers large-scale storage of vaccines with advanced cold and ultra-cold capabilities, at temperatures ranging from +8 °C to -80 °C. Going a step further, it also offers a unique in-country vaccination service, which combines vaccine delivery with rapid on-ground deployment of medical and logistics staff and equipment.
