Nomination Title: Mammoth DETECTR™ Platform

The COVID-19 pandemic has shed light on the urgent need for decentralized diagnostic tools that provide both rapid and accurate results. Molecular diagnostics, which targets DNA and RNA, offers the highest accuracy for early disease detection, but traditionally requires large, expensive laboratory machines and trained technicians to operate. Rapid diagnostics, like an antibody test or a pregnancy test, offers a low-cost, decentralized and scalable option that can be administered closer to the patient, but lacks the specificity and molecular detection capability needed for high accuracy.

The current and most common method for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 uses a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), which is restricted for use within specialized laboratories and takes days to process results, which is not conducive for stopping the spread of the virus.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mammoth reconfigured its DETECTR™ platform to detect SARS-CoV-2 and published the first peer-reviewed example of CRISPR diagnostics using real patient samples in Nature Biotechnology. DETECTR™ can deliver results for SARS-CoV-2 in under 30 minutes and be visualized on a lateral flow strip, similar to an at-home pregnancy test. DETECTR™ offers a faster, lower-cost, and visual alternative to traditional qRT-PCR assays, and offers similar levels of sensitivity and specificity.

Shortly after reconfiguring its DETECTR™ platform, the company partnered with GlaxoSmithKline to develop a COVID-19 test in an easy-to-use, disposable, handheld format. Separately, Mammoth was awarded part of the NIH’s $1.5 billion dollar grant for its RADx COVID-19 diagnostic program. Mammoth has leveraged the funds to develop a CRISPR-based high-throughput testing system. The company has partnered with Hamilton and Merk to manufacture this system, and most recently partnered with Agilent to automate and scale the same system. The unprecedented speed at which Mammoth is developing its SARS-CoV-2 DETECTR™ assays will help people get access to critical information about their health and mitigate the further spread of COVID-19.
