In November 2022, Parallax Advanced Research launched Data Abyss–a platform that provides research intelligence analytics to aid researchers and their institutions in countering the exploitation of their work by strategic competitors. In other words, Data Abyss identifies and alerts US researchers of potential technological espionage with the intent of protecting the integrity of open science, as well as US taxpayer funded research. Data Abyss is the only known adversarial strategic S&T-focused open-source intelligence search engine.
Data Abyss is a software platform that has been specifically developed to perform research and knowledge security monitoring and investigations that support the United States’ array of initiatives throughout the Executive Branch per National Security Presidential Memorandum 33, Small Business Innovation Research, Small Business Technology Transfer, and Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security objectives. Research security defines safeguarding the Nation’s research enterprise against the misappropriation of research and development to the detriment of national and economic security, related violations of research integrity, and foreign government interference. Knowledge security entails mitigating the risks of espionage, unwanted knowledge transfer, intellectual property theft, data leakage, and the misuse of dual-use technology.

Data Abyss is the only known adversarial strategic S&T-focused open-source intelligence search engine. Data Abyss customers use the tool to detect exposure surfaces between their faculty and foreign defense organizations and named entities from the Commerce Restricted Entity Lists and where those relationships appear ongoing, including those with direct military applications.
Data Abyss leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted processing techniques to track down adversary affiliates and linked transnational entities. Very high-risk entities are tagged to track the entities’ connections with already tracked entities by the US Department of Commerce, Federal Communications Commission, and Australia Strategic Policy Institute.
